HAWLEY LIBRARY - PAWS & PAGES
Reading to Therapy Dogs
PAWS & PAGES
Every Tuesday from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM.
Stop in - no registration necessary!
We're very fortunate to have folks in our area willing to volunteer their time (and that of their puppers) so our patrons can benefit from the Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D) program! Founded in 1999, the R.E.A.D program improves children's reading and communications skills by providing a non-judgemental atmosphere in which they may read aloud without feeling apprehensive about the reactions of teachers and peers. R.E.A.D companions are all registered therapy dogs and travel to schools, libraries, and wherever else there's a need with their handlers.
So many children struggle when reading aloud, for a variety of reasons. Therapy dogs are trained to be good listeners and offer comfort, and the change in our readers when they realize that they can simply be themselves...no corrections, no comments, just a furry friend basking in the attention...is astounding.
Paws & Pages isn't just for children, however - patrons of ALL AGES are welcome to spend some time sharing stories with Abby or Sophie. And trust us...you'll enjoy it more than you ever thought possible. Whenever the Abby or Sophie walk through the door on Tuesday, all of our staff drops what they're doing to say howdy and are promptly rewarded with tail wags and warm fuzzy feelings.
