JUAN ESPINO, FOLK ARTIST
Thursday March 26th, 2020 5:30 PM
Thursday March 26th, 2020 5:30 PM
Juan Espino’s paintings capture a “Slice of life” in rural American with its present day charm. His landscapes incorporate vibrant colors and primitive art genre that document numerous local scenes, including those from Honesdale, Hawley and Milford. He says: ‘My style of painting is an attempt to convey the way I feel when I depict scenes real or imagined from history, memory or contemporary life; the many figures and playful details invite the viewer to take a closer look and perhaps share a smile.’
Following his path from practicing law in Mexico, to New York City and eventually relocating to rural Pennsylvania, he is the owner of Hawley’s Looking Glass Gallery with his wife Millie as well as being a renowned international folk artist. He did not discover his art talent until settling in Hawley. Impacted by the beauty of the countryside as well as the historic buildings and homes, he began to capture this beauty on canvas. Juan’s love of art and history are inextricably intertwined in his life and in his art.
Juan is also a tireless community activist. In his native state of Michoacan, Mexico, he founded several cultural organizations dedicated to promote Mexican traditions, dance, music and folk art. Here in Northeast Pennsylvania, he founded the Lake Region Art League and participates in many cultural endeavors.
